Compounding is necessary in many situations such as:
Drug shortages or discontinuations where the commercial product is unavailable (very common since 2009)
Medications need flavoring to make them more palatable
Commercial products contain fillers which patients are allergic to
Patient requires dosage form or strength which is not available commercially

What is Compounding / What Does Compounding Mean?

Compounding is the practice of combining the latest medical knowledge with state-of-the-art technology together to make customized medications from scratch. Compounding, once the foundation of pharmacy practice has become less common. At Ashbrittle Pharmacy we have maintained the practice of compounding. Our team of professionals have each received specialized training in the art and science of compounding that enables them to prepare customized medications from scratch to meet the unique needs of patients and physicians alike.

The demand for professional compounding has increased as commercially available products have gone on extended backorders or otherwise become unavailable. Furthermore, commercially available products often fall short of meeting a patients needs due to the strengths available or the inclusion or exclusion of certain ingredients.
